You Can’t Treat an MRI

Often I meet patients that are distressed after getting the results of an MRI or X-Ray. This is not unusual situation. Between the medical terms and fact you are reading something about a condition you may have to face it can be difficult to interpret. At times we have “incidental findings” that are merely abnormalities on a MRI or Xray that may or may not be significant to your problem.

What does this mean?

You cannot treat the patient just on what a MRI has found. A MRI or Xray will visualize several anatomical variations. Of equal importance is how you discuss what bothers you. There are common ways patients that have a rotator cuff tear talk about what is bothering them. This paired with a physical examination allows a clinician make a diagnosis.  These studies are merely part of the overall understanding of how to best treat you. That is why being a good at recounting a history of how a pain or limitation presents helps the clinician improve the chances of setting up a effective treatment plan. Next time you get results from a MRI or X-Ray realize it is only a part of how a doctor or clinician gives you a proper diagnosis and how to best treat you.
