Posture, Posture, Posture!

Dr. Fiebert’s words still ring in my ears, “Having your patients understand how posture influences their condition is one of the keys to successful treatment!”
For years I have tried to find ways to remind patients to stand up straight.  Poor posture, leading to muscle imbalance, can result in neck, arm, leg or back pain.  This may be accompanied by numbness or tingling.  Injuries, poor sleeping postures, and repetitive activities may generate pain.  In our sedentary society, sitting for too long can also be a source of pain.
To treat this discomfort we first perform a muscle imbalance evaluation to identify the tight or weak muscles. We then construct a treatment plan which consists of strengthening some muscle groups and stretching others.  With progress, a general exercise program that focuses on maintaining good posture is implemented.
However, even when patients attend to their posture, they frequently do not maintain the proper stance because they are uncomfortable  doing so or unable.  When I position a patient in a correct standing, they will sometimes feel like they are going to fall over.  The body has to be trained to keep itself in this new position and accept it as normal.
Recently, I’ve received a device from https://www.iposture.com/ which addresses this problem. It is very light and about the size of a a quarter. It adheres to your chest or can be worn as a necklace. Once you slouch for greater than one minute the device will vibrate on your chest and remind you to stand up straight.
I’m sure that this gadget will be a great help to my patients, and I know that Dr. Fiebert would heartily agree.
