In a recent study the frequency of abnormal findings in patients over 60 years of age were looked at in patients without pain or symptoms:
- 36% had herniated disc
- 21% had spinal stenosis
- 90% degenerated or bulging disc
An important sentence on most MRI reports cautions that “findings should be correlated with clinical findings”. All this means is the history of problem and physical examination by the physical therapist and physician should match with the MRI findings. The MRI is just a part of how a a diagnosis is made. Keep that in mind prior to running to surgery or more invasive care.
