Neck and Shoulder Pain
How to Put an End to Neck and Shoulder Pain and Stiffness - Without Taking Painkillers, Without Risking Surgery and Without Having to Wait to See the Doctor!
If you’ve got neck and shoulder pain, stiffness or an ache - it’s very tempting to think that it’s nothing, that it will go away on its own. Or, you pass it off as having just “slept awkwardly”, or that it’s just a “muscular” or a bit of “spasm” stiffness that “everyone” your age suffers from...
Too often neck pain is seen has just something that happens as we age. Just inevitable. It is very possible your dad or an aunt complained of “stiff” and “achy” neck often found nursing a hot pack growing up. Neck and shoulder pain might be common but it is not normal.
In some cases shoulder pain is coming from your neck… or the a weak shoulder is giving you neck pain. Only spine and shoulder specialists can often figure that this complex problem.
Or you have problems in both areas! Don’t be too hard on yourself if you can’t figure it out alone! Good news is with the proper care with a specialist in shoulder and neck can evaluate and set you on the right course of care!
Most people comment that there’s no obvious reason why it happened - but it doesn’t seem to be improving like it did in the past!
If that’s happening to you, you’re not alone - and we hear this type of thing all the time. In fact, Neck and Shoulder problems are one of THE most common problem that we see in our physical therapy clinic in Paramus, New Jersey.
And when it comes to neck and shoulder pain, everybody we see wants to know...
“Why is This Happening to me?”
or
“I’m really feeling old and just haven’t been able to exercise like I used to because it always makes my neck pain worse!”
or
“Why Am I Still Suffering With Neck & Shoulder Pain After Putting Up With It For 6 Months (Maybe More)?
Many people have told me they have forgotten what is was like without having pain, stiffness or achiness. You should not assume that it can’t change just because it has been there for awhile.”
Most people think that when they get neck and shoulder pain, it’s just going to go away on its own.
That they’ll wake up one morning and like “magic”, it’ll be as if neck pain never happened… But then 6 months later you’re still living with neck and shoulder pain - often even worse than it was when it came on.
Does That Sound Like You?
Another scenario we see all the time in our physical therapy clinic is when people go to the Doctor, and the Doctor tells them to rest and “try these painkillers” and “see how it goes”. The Doctor may even tell you a couple exercises for neck and shoulder pain that makes you feel worse…..
But this is rarely ever the best advice and often 6 weeks later, they end up going neck and shoulder pain to the Doctor again because it hasn’t got any better. Worse, they’re often given yet another prescription of even stronger pills, and advised MORE rest. This is madness and explains why so many people aged 30-60 years old are suffering with chronic neck and shoulder pain.
You may ask yourself why should I believe this going to change after seeing an MRI showing a disc bulge in your neck or Xray with arthritis in your shoulder. Which can’t be further from the truth!
Has This Type of Thing Happened to You?
Why else does neck and shoulder pain last longer than it should do? Well, it’s easy to get confused because you’ve been told different things, by different people. There’s lots of people out there who are happy to dispense advice - but not all of it is credible.
Maybe you think your neck and shoulder pain was caused by doing something - like lifting or sleeping awkwardly - but really it was caused by years and years of poor posture that caused the muscles in your neck and shoulder to become weak and gradual you may lose a bit of flexibility. The lifting or the awkward sleeping position was just the EFFECT of that. Simply the “Straw that broke the Camels back”’
If you don’t know what you’re doing - neck and shoulder pain can be very confusing and because of this, many people just end up accepting it as ‘part of life’ - as if it’s normal, and ‘just the way it is’.
Slowly you LIMIT or STOP your activities you love like golf, tennis or boot camp classes or lifting up your kids on your shoulders because everything seems to make it worse. Over time your body deconditions out of fear of making things worse and not believing you have options. Gradually you become deconditioned, feel stiffer and stop doing more and more things you enjoy in life...
