If you’ve suffered from a knee injury or have undergone knee surgery in the past, there’s a chance you may experience a flare-up of pain from time to time. If you’re finding it difficult to participate in activities you typically enjoy, like walking or running, perhaps a spin on a stationary bike is the answer for you. For some, it’s a great way to get the muscles pumping and blood flowing to that area.
I am a firm believer in modifications. Don’t let a flare-up stop you from getting some cardio in and moving … try an alternative way to exercise instead to maintain your strength and flush out some of the swelling. It greatly depends on your specific injury, but most likely, a stationary bicycle won’t delay healing or set you back. When you recover from your flare-up, you can return to walking, running, or whatever else it is that you enjoy doing.
When I put patients on the bike in my clinic, we utilize the manual setting and adjust the resistance, maintaining comfortability. Remember: this exercise isn’t for everyone.
