In the state of New Jersey patients have Direct Access to Physical Therapy care. What does Direct Access mean? The Direct Access Law, signed into law in 2003, allows patients to receive care from a licensed physical therapist without seeing a physician first. Insurance is recognizing and covering patients for care received by a physical therapist without a physician referral. Typically the care is cheaper and safe. At Apex Orthopedic Rehabilitation we see a significant number of patients without a prescription. When I first meet a patient we review a patients history and then decide whether they are appropriate for physical therapy treatment. In certain cases we can start treatment that visit and others we recommend they see their primary physician or a specialist if necessary.
